Phú Yên: Towards official exports of lobster

Businesses, cooperatives, and farmers in the lobster capital of Phú Yên are being supported to move towards official lobster exports to the Chinese market.

Sông Cầu town, the “capital” of lobster in Phú Yên province, had about 62,550 lobster farming cages in 2023, producing 2,070 tons. Of these, 90% were green lobsters and 10% were rock lobsters, with revenues exceeding 2,000 billion dong per year.

Nguyễn Thái Hải Anh, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Sông Cầu town, said that 80-90% of the lobster production in the area is exported to the Chinese market through border gates, which are unstable. Therefore, to develop sustainable lobster farming, the town is addressing obstacles related to allocation for water surface, licensing, and area code issuance, while also building supply chains, issuing codes for businesses, seeking partners, and expanding markets to stabilize the trade of lobster products.

In his opinion, Tien Kieu Co., Ltd. has been granted a formal lobster export code to officially ship lobsters to the Chinese market.

Nguyễn Thị Túy Kiều, Director of Tien Kieu Co., Ltd., said that for official export of lobster to China, the company has studied the regulations of both Vietnam and China. After more than 2 years, the company has been listed by China and granted a code to export lobsters to this market.

To support farmers and businesses with the procedures of official exports of lobster, the Quality Control Center for Agriculture, Forestry, and Aquaculture of Region 3, in collaboration with Sông Cầu town People’s Committee, provided training courses to introduce Chinese requirements for lobster exports.

Lê Hoàng Lâm, Director of the Quality Control Center for Agriculture, Forestry, and Aquaculture of Region 3, said that so far, 850 Vietnamese seafood processing facilities have been permitted to export seafood to the Chinese market. Among them, 57 facilities can export live seafood (1 in Phú Yên).

Furthermore, the Quality Control Center for Agriculture, Forestry, and Aquaculture of Region 3 is also disseminating Vietnamese and international regulations on agricultural, forestry, and aquaculture exports to the business community and the public.
