Vietnam’s pangasius exports in 2024 forecasted to reach USD 2 billion
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the export value of pangasius in 2024 is projected to achieve the target of USD 2 billion.
On November 17, at the conference titled “Reviewing the Pangasius Industry in 2024 and Planning for 2025,” held in Cao Lanh City, Dong Thap, To Thi Tuong Lan, Deputy Secretary-General of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), forecasted that pangasius export turnover in 2024 could reach the target of USD 2 billion. Pangasius export prices are expected to rise during the year-end peak season.
The D- Fisheries reports that in 2024, the total area for pangasius farming is estimated at 5,370 hectares, with a harvest output of approximately 1.67 million tons, equivalent to 99% of the same period in 2023. By October, pangasius export turnover reached USD 1.56 billion, marking an 8.9% increase compared to the same period last year.
Pangasius are mainly farmed in several Mekong Delta provinces, including Dong Thap, An Giang, Can Tho, Ben Tre, and Vinh Long. By the end of October, fry production is estimated at 25.95 billion, and fingerling production at 3.9 billion. Nationwide, there are 1,920 hatchery facilities, comprising 2 broodstock breeding facilities, 76 fry production facilities, and 1,842 nurseries for raising fry to fingerlings.
The D-Fisheries reported that by 2025, pangasius production is targeted to reach 1.65 million tons, with export revenue projected at USD 2 billion. The industry will focus on improving the quality of pangasius fingerlings. Additionally, efforts will be made to conduct research and gradually replace fish meal and fish oil in feed production with alternative ingredients, such as plant-based materials, insects, microalgae, seaweed, and other promising sources.
