Kien Giang releases over 2 million shrimp, crab, and fish into the lagoon
On the morning of February 12, Ha Tien City (Kien Giang) held a ceremony to release more than 2 million juvenile shrimp, crabs, and fish into Dong Ho Lagoon as part of ongoing efforts to restore aquatic resources and protect the environment.
The event was organized in celebration of the 289th anniversary of the establishment of Tao Dan Chieu Anh Cac (1736–2025) and aimed to replenish fish stocks while raising awareness about sustainable fisheries management.
Nguyen Hai Quoc, Vice Chairman of the Ha Tien City People’s Committee, highlighted the vital role of fisheries in the local economy. However, he warned that overfishing and destructive fishing methods—such as electric shocks and fine-mesh nets—have led to a decline in aquatic resources, reduced natural regeneration, and harmed the ecological balance.
“Restoring aquatic resources is not just about restocking fish populations; it’s also about preserving ecological balance and increasing public awareness of the importance of sustainable fisheries,” Quoc said.
The annual release of aquatic species at the Tao Dan Chieu Anh Cac Festival is part of Ha Tien’s broader effort to promote conservation and sustainable fishing practices. This year, over 2 million shrimp, crabs, and fish were released into Dong Ho Lagoon, including more than 1 million shrimp donated by 17 organizations and individuals.
City officials also recognized and thanked local businesses, organizations, and residents for their active role in protecting and replenishing aquatic resources.
