Public – private partnership in aquaculture development

Directorate of Fisheries (DOF), Vietnam Fisheries Society (VFS), Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) and Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) entered into an agreement to develop the project “Support for further sustainable development of Mekong Delta aquaculture by public – private partnership”.

Deputy Chairman of VFS Phạm Anh Tuấn said that the Project is aimed to better manage two key sectors of fisheries which are pangasius and brackish-water shrimp. It will improve the transparency in production, value and quality of products. Additionally, deseasies will be controlled upon the environment monitoring and disease warning system, leading high productivity of shrimp and pangasius. Farming process will be built upon the supply chain together with improving survival rate and reducing the use of antibiotic or chemical in pangasius and shrimp.

Traceability is required for pangasius and shrimps sold to leading markets i.e. the US, EU and Japan and will be provided enterprises in training courses. The project will help enterprises set up traceability system which meets every market requirement and approach Seafood Task Force program. This is considered a specific example of public – private partnership which helps mobilize resources from the Government and individuals to deal with challenges with sustainably development of Vietnam fisheries.

The project is intentionally funded with 1,750 thousand USD with 300 thousands USD from public sector and 810 thousand USD from private sector, 510 thousand USD from IDH and 110,000 USD from non-governmental organizations. It was implemented in the coordination of VFS, VASEP and Directorate of Fisheries, Department of Animal Health, Mekong Delta Provincial Agriculture and Rural Departments, seafood enterprises in Mekong Delta, associations, non-governmental organizations i.e. IDH, WWF, GIZ, TômMỹThanh Association and other functional agencies.

The project is carried out from September 01st 2018 to December 31st 2020 and opened to enterprises, units and other organizations for further sustainable development of Vietnam fisheries.
