The US and Vietnam entered a MOU to strengthen the fisheries law enforcement

In the afternoon of July 22, in Hanoi, Directorate of Fisheries and General Department of Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) of the U.S Department of State entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen the enforcement of fisheries law, fisheries management and IUU fishing prevention.

Directorate of fisheries was presented by General Director Trần Đình Luân and Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) of the U.S Department of State was presented by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Vietnam Daniel J. Kritenbrink.

MOU aims to strengthen the ability of fisheries management and enforcement of fisheries law including prevention of IUU fishing, contravention of marine resources conservation regulations.

The cooperation activities involve five contents: (1) building and developing Cooperation program/Project of providing agencies of fisheries law enforcement of Vietnam with technical supports to prevent and fight against IUU fishing activities and crimes related to fisheries, and law enforcement officials with information of training, investigation techniques or education of international law enforcement; (2) cooperate to hold training courses and exchanges of professional skills in investigation, examination and patrols in the ocean; (3) provide technical support to operate specialized equipment and crime scenes, and manage criminal evidence; (4) Implement professional exchange programs of patrol in the ocean; (5) Support to establish training facilities upon agreements of the two parties.

In his speech,  Ambassador Daniel J. Kritenbrink said that the US is experienced in managing and enforcing fisheries law and ready to share. They hope to cooperate with Vietnam to develop the fisheries in a sustainable way and support Vietnam in the face of illegal threats in the ocean.

General Director Trần Đình Luân emphasized the importance of MOU which is a significant basis for further cooperation between Vietnam and the US in the fisheries industry, especially in the prevention of IUU fishing.
