Phu Yen masters breeding technology for golden pompano aquaculture

After testing and adopting new processes, Tom Vang Aquatic Products JSC, based in Tuy Hoa City, has successfully developed the technology to breed and farm golden pompano in offshore waters. The achievement paves the way for industrial-scale marine aquaculture using HDPE plastic cages in Phu Yen Province.

The project is part of Vietnam’s Mountainous and Rural Program, with total funding of VND 10 billion (around USD 400,000), including over VND 4.1 billion from the central government’s science and technology budget and the rest from company investment. Its main goal is to apply advanced technology to establish a breeding and commercial farming model using Norwegian-style cage systems for export markets.

The project successfully transferred and implemented breeding and grow-out processes, trained seven technicians specializing in industrial-scale production, and held training sessions for 100 local households to promote offshore marine farming aligned with the province’s aquaculture development strategy.

Key outcomes include establishing a breeding model that raises fertilized eggs to fry and fingerlings with an annual capacity of 1.2 million juveniles. It also deployed six HDPE nursery cages for raising fish from 6-7 cm to 8-10 cm and four Norwegian-style HDPE grow-out cages equipped with automated feeding systems, achieving average yields of 30 tonnes per cycle.

Authorities hope the project will advance sustainable offshore aquaculture, reduce pollution, limit disease risks for fishers, and supply traceable, high-quality seafood for both domestic consumption and export. It is also expected to diversify farmed species, create jobs, and boost incomes for coastal communities.
