Ninh Bình: Clam farms in Kim Sơn district win ASC certificate

After 15 years of establishment and development, the clam farming area in Kim Sơn district has just been officially granted the ASC certificate by the Control Union Certifications. This made it become the second farming area of Vietnam and the world to be granted such a global certificate, paving a new way for exportation to demanding markets.

On November 29, the Department of Agriculture and Rural development worked with the Directorate of Fisheries, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development and People’s Committee of Kim Sơn district to hold an event announcing the certification of ASC to the clam farming area in Kim Sơn district.

Clams have been cultured in Kim Sơn’s coastal areas since 2006-2007 with the initial farming area of tens of hectares. The district is using 1,200 of land on clam farming now, producing 25-30 thousand tons of commercial clam per year. Besides, hundreds of billion baby clams are produced a year.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural development has frequently cooperated with the People’s Committee of Kim Sơn district to provide local farmers with farming techniques and management methods so as to increase productivity and carry out the mollusk supervision program for food safety assurance.

Kim Sơn’s clam farmers are contacting the International Collaborating Center for Aquaculture and Fisheries Sustainability (ICAFIS), the Research Center for Resources and Rural Development (RECERD) and Thanh Hoa Fishery Import – Export JSC (HASUVIMEX) to deploy the Project of “ASC based clam value chain in Ninh Bình”.

On September 14, 2022, the farming area of clam material in Kim Sơn district was officially granted the ASC certificate by the Control Union, becoming the second clam farming area in Vietnam and the world to be certified ASC for the Meretrix Lyrata clam.

During the event, after receiving the ASC certificate, a representative of the clam culture community in Ninh Bình and HASUVIMEX, a participating unit, signed a memorandum of understanding for the value chain.
