Quy Nhon: Bumper Anchovy Catch Kicks Off the Year for Nhon Ly Fishermen
In the first days of the new year, dozens of nearshore fishing boats from Nhon Ly village (Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province) have returned with abundant anchovy hauls.
By noon on February 1, the fourth day of Tet, numerous fishing boats docked along Nhon Ly’s shores, their holds packed with fresh anchovies and anchovy-mouth fish.
Huynh Cong Chinh, a purse seine boat owner from Ly Hoa hamlet (Nhon Ly commune), shared that he and other boat owners decided to set sail on the fourth day of Tet, and to their delight, they landed a large anchovy catch by morning. “Before the Lunar New Year, there were hardly any krill or anchovies, and we all feared a poor season. But right on the first trip of the year, many boats brought in plenty of anchovies. A big catch like this at the start of the year is considered ‘ocean luck,’ and it’s a hopeful sign for a successful fishing season ahead,” Chinh said.
Ho Thi Thu Hien, a seafood wholesaler in Nhon Ly, noted, “Each boat earned around 20 to 30 million VND from anchovy catches on this first trip. Many locals and tourists came down to the docks to buy fresh anchovies. After days of heavy Tet feasts, people get tired of meat, and fresh anchovies cooked in soup or used in banh xeo are a refreshing treat during the holidays.”
