Shrimp export reached 1.31 billion USD in the first 5 months of 2021
According to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the total export value of Vietnamese shrimp recorded until the end of May 2021 reached 1.31 billion USD, up 11.8% compared to the last period.
Shrimp export to most markets all reached positive growth, but shrimp export to China – HongKong decreased by 19% over the same period of 2020. According to VASEP, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-pacific Partnership (CPTPP) market is still the leading export market of Vietnamese shrimp enterprises currently. In the first 5 months this year, shrimp export to this market reached 393.4 million USD, up 11.8%, accounting for 28.8% of total shrimp export value, in which Japan is the biggest shrimp and prawn import market with a total export value reaching 230.7 million USD, up 2.3% in the corresponding period.
Noticeably, in the first 5 months of 2021, shrimp export to Australia remarkably increased by 79.2% to reach over 71.8 million USD. In May 2021, shrimp export to this market reached 17.14 million USD, an increase by nearly 144%. Until now, shrimp exports to both Japan and Australia are still stable and have considerable growth. These two markets both improve import freeze whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) from Vietnam.
Until the end of May 2021, shrimp export to the American market was measured to reach 294 million USD, up 31% over the same period of 2020. Vietnam is currently one of 4 biggest shrimp suppliers to the US market (along with India, Ecuador, Indonesia).
From the beginning of this year, shrimp demand, especially whiteleg shrimp of many European countries, has bounced back. Until the end of May 2021, shrimp export to the EU reached 201.3 million USD, up 24% over the same period last year. This included export value to German reaching 53.9 million USD, up 34%; to the Netherlands reaching 51.7 million USD, up 13.8%; to Belgium reaching nearly 33.5 million USD, up 14.2% and to France reaching 18.4 million USD, up 8.6%.
In addition, in the first 5 months this year, the export value to several big markets such as Korea, England, Taiwan and Russia also grew well with the increase of 1.2%; 14.9%; 16.2% and 72.8% respectively over the same period in 2020.
