Vietnam begins domestic kataifi production, enhancing seafood sector efficiency
Vietnam has started local production of kataifi, a premium shredded pastry used in value-added shrimp, fish, and squid products, in a move expected to boost the country’s seafood processing capacity and reduce reliance on imports.
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said kataifi, known for its crisp texture and moisture-retaining properties, is widely used in ready-to-eat seafood meals for export to high-standard markets such as Japan, South Korea, and the European Union.
Dai Phat Food Trading Co. Ltd. is the first Vietnamese firm to produce kataifi domestically to international specifications, offering it in natural white, yellow, orange, green, and crumb formats. The company has begun exporting to Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.
“Local production gives us greater control over cost, lead times, and quality – all essential in seafood processing,” a company representative said.
Vietnam’s seafood exports rose nearly 19% year-on-year to USD 5.2 billion in the first half of 2025. Deep-processed products are gaining share, driven by global demand for convenience, hygiene, and visual appeal.
Industry experts say domestic kataifi production could help Vietnam move further up the global seafood value chain.
