Vietnam’s tilapia fillet exports to Brazil surge more than 7,000%

Vietnam’s exports of tilapia fillets to Brazil surged more than 7,000% in 2025, despite Brazil itself being one of the world’s leading tilapia producers.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnam’s tilapia shipments to Brazil recorded four-digit growth during the year.

Export value of tilapia fillets to Brazil reached USD 11 million in 2025, up 7,552% from 2024. The sharp increase made Brazil the fastest-growing market among the top importers of Vietnamese tilapia fillets last year.

The surge highlights the strong potential of Brazil and the wider South American region for Vietnam’s frozen tilapia fillet products, particularly in segments serving domestic consumption and food processing.

VASEP said Vietnam’s overall tilapia exports also posted solid growth in 2025, with total export value exceeding USD 99 million, underscoring the species’ growing role in the country’s seafood export structure.

Exports of tilapia fillets and other tilapia meat products totalled $61 million, accounting for 61% of Vietnam’s total tilapia export value.

The United States remained the largest market for Vietnamese tilapia and the leading destination for tilapia fillets. Exports of tilapia fillets to the U.S. reached USD 40 million in 2025, up 499% from a year earlier.

The sharp rise in shipments to the United States reflects strong demand as tilapia supplies from some other major producers, including Brazil and China, face headwinds from tariffs and rising production costs.
