Dong Thap pushes upgrades in pangasius industry
Dong Thap province in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta is intensifying efforts to modernize its pangasius sector, aiming to raise product value and strengthen its foothold in global markets.
Dong Thap is rolling out measures to reinforce the pangasius value chain, a strategic product that accounts for more than one-third of Vietnam’s output and export earnings, generating between USD 1.8 billion and 2.4 billion annually.

In recent years, cooperatives and leading firms such as Hung Ca and Truong Giang have adopted VietGAP, GlobalGAP, ASC and BAP standards, alongside closed production models that help reduce disease, lift output by 3-5% and boost credibility with overseas buyers. The provincial Department of Industry and Trade has also introduced a digital traceability system to standardize practices and move toward full digitalization of the sector.
Nationwide pangasius output reached more than 871,900 tons in the first half of 2025, up 4.5% from a year earlier, while exports rose 11% to USD 1.023 billion. Dong Thap alone accounted for about 35% of that share. The Vietnam Pangasius Association said improved quality control and technology adoption have enabled the province’s fish to reach major markets including China, the United States and the European Union.
Looking ahead, Dong Thap is targeting 75% use of high-quality fry and food safety certification for all farming facilities, while expanding GAP-certified acreage. Companies are being urged to diversify products for different markets – sliced pangasius for Africa, skinless fillets for Japan and fish cakes for ASEAN – while strengthening supply chain links from breeding to exports.
Vietnam Pangasius Association Chairman Duong Nghia Quoc said Dong Thap must continue investing in fry development, value-added processing and logistics to sharpen competitiveness, expand access to premium markets and cement its role as the Mekong Delta’s pangasius hub.
