Binh Dinh builds red tilapia export chain from Dinh Binh reservoir

Central province of Binh Dinh is developing a red tilapia value chain at the Dinh Binh reservoir, targeting international food safety standards following initial export success to Japan and interest from European buyers.

The 226-million-cubic-meter reservoir, located in Vinh Thanh District, is being utilized for cage aquaculture, with over 460 cages operated by 32 households. Red tilapia is expected to account for 600 out of 750 tonnes of total output in 2024. However, the sector remains fragmented, with limited quality control, no cooperative structure, and high production costs.

In June 2024, Mai Tin Binh Dinh Co., Ltd. – a Japanese-invested firm, exported red tilapia to Japan for sashimi processing, receiving favorable feedback. The company has since proposed the establishment of certified farming zones aligned with global food safety regulations.

Local authorities have begun implementing a value chain model, introducing quality standards and training farmers in safe aquaculture practices. From June 2025, Mai Tin will purchase red tilapia at a fixed price of VND 60,000-65,000 (USD 2.36-2.56) per kilogram, aiming to provide stable market access and position the region for global exports.
