Da Nang makes big push to become one of Vietnam’s largest fishing hubs

Significant upgrades are underway at Tho Quang fishing port and anchorage of Son Tra District. Da Nang city is on track to become one of five key fishing centers of the country.

After phase one, with an investment of VND217.5 billion (US$8.72 million), Tho Quang fishing port and anchorage is being dredged, upgraded and entered phase two with a VND250 billion ($10 million) budget.

The upgrade project began in early 2024 under the supervision of the city’s Agricultural and Rural Development Construction Investment Project Management Board. It is expected to be completed within four years.

The project will connect piers 1 and 3 to pier 2 and a newly constructed pier of the Tho Quang fishing port.

Other upgrades include improvements to the Tho Quang wholesale seafood market, the construction of a wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 400 m3 per day, and enhancements to internal roads and drainage systems.

Once completed, the project will significantly increase the port’s capacity and efficiency, meeting higher fishing port standards, serving as a regional storm shelter and supporting fishing logistic services.

The upgraded port is anticipated to accommodate up to 300 vessels per day, each with a maximum capacity of 2,000 CV, and handle 100,000 metric tons of goods annually.

In August, Da Nang’s seafood production surpassed 3,500 metric tons, up 17.7 percent in compared to previous month and a 14.6 percent year-on-year, according to the city’s statistics office.

As the national fishing port system plan for 2021-30, with a vision extending to 2050, Tho Quang is set to become one of five key fishing hubs in Vietnam.
